Strengthening Healthcare Waste Management in Chhedagad Municipality, Jajarkot

To enhance the quality of healthcare services and safeguard the health of both providers and communities, comprehensive waste management facilities were established in selected health facilities of Chhedagad Municipality between 1 May and 20 June 2026.

Healthcare waste, if not properly managed, poses significant risks to both health workers and the community. Addressing this challenge, targeted interventions focused on improving the safe segregation, handling, and disposal of medical, organic, inorganic, and placental waste.

Improved Waste Management Infrastructure

As part of this initiative, dedicated waste management systems were installed at key health facilities:

  • At Suwanauli Health Post, a waste management facility was constructed with separate pits for biohazardous and non-risk (general) waste, enabling proper waste segregation and safe disposal.
  • At Nagar Hospital, a placenta pit was constructed and made fully operational, ensuring the safe disposal of placental waste in accordance with national healthcare waste management and IPC standards.

These facilities represent a critical step toward institutionalizing safe and sustainable healthcare waste management practices.

The establishment of these facilities has led to notable improvements in both service delivery and environmental safety:

  • Safe and hygienic disposal of placental waste is now ensured at Nagar Hospital
  • Improved segregation and disposal practices for biohazardous and general waste at Suwanauli Health Post
  • Replacement of unsafe waste disposal practices with standardized waste management systems
  • Enhanced sanitation and infection prevention within health facilities
  • Reduced risks of healthcare-associated infections and environmental contamination

Importantly, these improvements have contributed to better quality and safer maternal and reproductive health services, ensuring a cleaner and more secure healthcare environment for both patients and providers.

With these interventions in place, health facilities in Chhedagad Municipality are now better equipped to manage healthcare waste in line with national standards. The initiative not only improves day-to-day healthcare practices but also supports long-term environmental sustainability and public health safety.
