Applicability of Force Field Analysis and Social Norms Analysis Plot Framework

Force Field analysis (FFA) (Kurt Lewin) and Social Norms Analysis Plot Framework (SNAP) (Care USA) has been adapted to explore, assess harmful social norms/stigma and other forces and then understand and plan (actors or factors) as per the project theory of change. This has been done in two Palikas each of Lumbini (Arghakhanchi) and Sudurpaschim (Achham) Povince. The FFA helps to dissect present, future, and resisting forces to attain change. It is also useful when the predominant/operative social norms and reference groups (the empirical and normative expectations) are in the exploratory phase for the project and support the SNAP study.

The SNAP framework on the other hand helps to understand the strength of a prevalent norm, sanctions or consequences for not following a norm, how those sanctions affect an individual or a groups’ adherence to the norm and identify the cracks in the prevalent norm to understand entry points and develop customized social norms activities/interventions. After the first phase of FFA and SNAP, the changes to be made in the intervention and modality will be identified and strategized for intervention and programmatic improvement. Based on the findings of FFA, Natural Leaders and Champions will make their plan and priorities to focus or engage for their ongoing advocacy and agency building initiation. Based on this, as a follow-up for the Calendar Year 2021, there should be a review and/reflection of the FFA and SNAP framework in the same cluster and group, as it will help measure the changes (social norms and constraining forces) after the interventions have been scaled up. Also, the study will help to develop the Male engagement strategy which is a priority for projects in the and Calendar Year 2021.
